The Upper East Side apartment of the late Joan Rivers’ went on the market this week for a cool $28 Million. The legendary comic, who died unexpectedly last September at 81 after a botched throat procedure, called the 1 E 62nd Street penthouse home for 25 years. The magnificent home offers four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, five fireplaces, two terraces, soaring 23 foot ceilings & a ballroom all in a comfortable 5,000 square feet floor plan. No detailed is overlooked, adorned with sky blue painted ceilings, ornate moldings & one of a kind furnishings. The home is as every bit extravagant as Joan was herself. She even famously joked, “It’s what Marie Antoinette would have done if she had money.”

However, the home did not always have Joan’s touch. When she fled Los Angeles after her husbands suicide & cancelled talk show, she found refuge in familiar New York City. The penthouse apartment, which was converted from a Limestone townhouse into 9 individual apartments was a disaster. The penthouse was infested with pigeons & even a ghost, as recalled on the 2009 series Celebrity Ghost Stories. BTW the ghost she had voodoo priestess evict was that ok J.P. Morgan’s niece.
“This was a true project of love. She took this apartment to another level. When you walk through the apartment, you really experience the grand nature of the rooms,” comments Corcoran listing broker Leighton Candler. “This is a very grown up apartment. It’s for someone who wants to entertain lavishly.”
The “Fashion Police” host entertained lavishly to say the least & threw plenty of parties in the ballroom. Notable party guests included Martha Stewart, Susan Lucci, Steve Forbes, Nancy Reagan and Regis Philbin. The furnishings & collections of Joan Rivers' estate will be sold at a separate auction.
